CHRISTINA KRUSE – MUSE MAGAZINE

The German artist lives in New York and has worked on diverse photo-projects since 1997. She began the first of her “books” (an ongoing project), with a Mamiya camera and a series of mixed media journals chronicling her world travels and composed of collages, drawings, writings in several languages and photographic self-portraits.

Kruse began a sort of conversation with herself in a journal that consisted mainly of images – including photos of herself – while she was travelling. Then she made another. And another. Thus far, at least, much of the material she has chosen to show or made for shows has had its genesis in her journals, (called “Reisebuch”).

About “Reisebuch”:
“Reisebuch 1-5″ is Kruse´s artist book with a limited edition of 425 copies. The Reisebuch consists of the notebooks Kruse has created over the past twelve years while on the road. These have frequently functioned as the primary laboratory of her artistic practice. And in all, she has employed her distinctive style of collage. Kruse explores her themes in self-portraits employing elaborate costumes, her Reisebuch can also be read both as the record of an ongoing series of private performance by a fine actress, and as an extended, multi-faceted self-portrait.Kruse’s Reisebuch project begun as an enterprise of solitude, done without assistants or collaborators, and almost purely for herself.
