JOACHIM BALDAUF – EXHIBITION THE WALLPAPER* YEARS

In 1999 Joachim Baldauf joined Wallpaper* and was responsible for some 10 covers and more than 30 editorials until 2001. As Tyler Brule, founding editor of Wallpaper*, once stated, Joachim Baldauf added a „very special sauce to the dish“ and, as a matter of fact, Wallpaper* became the breakthrough for Baldauf as one of today’s most highly acclaimed photographers. In retrospect, Wallpaper* itself could be considered as the internationally leading magazine of the 1990s in terms of luxurious looks and mise en scène, taste, style and habits. It became synonymous with the hedonism of a whole decade and due to its visual style and language still serves as a model for similar publications today.

JEAN-FRANCOIS CARLY FOR TEST MAGAZINE

For the visual platform of Test Magazine, Enfant Terrible Jean Francois Carly matched up with visionary, artist, designer and environmentalist Dr. Noki and created an absurd showcase of a slightly different collection. Noki designs, as arbitrary as they seem, evoked a trend of couture and culture jamming – ready-to-wear meets couture meets rock frock, sportswear, trash and revolt. Noki customs area symbolic critique or even a form of resistance, against mainstream, mass-market, homogenous and depersonalised commodity fashion. Where other labels rely on their brands and powerful logos to make them selling, Noki abducts these signs, reconfigures them, uses, abuses and reuses them and creates the new and unorthodox.
